What to send
A Shopify theme that breaks after an update usually shows one of a few symptoms: homepage sections or app blocks vanish, customizations you paid for disappear, a Liquid error appears on the storefront, or the product page loses its variant picker, metafield content or add-to-cart button. To scope the fix, send:
- The store URL (and the preview link of the broken theme if it is not published).
- The theme name and both versions: the one that worked and the one you updated to (the version is listed in
config/settings_schema.jsonundertheme_info). - What changed just before: a theme update, a theme switch, a new or removed app, or a code edit by a person or an app.
- Exactly what is missing or broken, with a screenshot, and any
Liquid errortext shown on the page. - Whether you still have the old theme version in your theme library.
Send your Shopify theme issue for a written scope and reply within 24 hours. Do not send your Shopify account password, payment details or customer exports in the public inquiry form; collaborator or staff access is requested later, scoped and revocable.
Common causes of a theme breaking after an update
- Custom code not carried over: Shopify only updates a Theme Store theme automatically when its code has not been edited. A manual update adds a fresh copy of the new version, so every edit made to the old copy (custom snippets, CSS in
assets/, changes insections/main-product.liquid) is missing until it is moved across. - Section and block settings that no longer match: in Online Store 2.0 themes the layout lives in JSON templates such as
templates/index.jsonandtemplates/product.json. If a section was renamed or removed in the new version, the template still references a type that no longer exists and the section silently disappears. - App embeds and app blocks left behind: apps added through theme app extensions have to be switched on again in the new theme (Theme settings, App embeds). Older apps that injected code into
theme.liquidor snippets leave{% render %}calls behind, which show up asLiquid error: Could not find asset snippets/...once the snippet is gone. - Vintage themes and metafields: a store still on an older vendor theme can lose metafield output or product tabs after moving content to newer Shopify features, because the old theme reads data the new setup no longer provides. Many of these themes no longer get vendor updates.
- Renamed settings and translations: a setting key changed in
settings_schema.jsonor a locale key changed inlocales/en.default.jsonshows as blank text or "translation missing" on the storefront. - Broken JavaScript: a custom script that targeted the old markup (class names,
data-attributes) throws an error in the browser console and stops the cart drawer, variant picker or quantity buttons.
Safe checks you can run yourself
- Do not delete the old theme. Keep the last working version in your theme library; it is the source for the code that needs to move across.
- Duplicate before you touch anything. Use Theme actions, Duplicate, and work only on the copy.
- Check app embeds. In the theme editor, open App embeds and confirm each app you use is switched on for the new theme.
- Read the console. Open the broken page in Chrome, press F12 and note the first red error in the Console tab.
- Roll back a single file if needed. In the code editor, each edited file has an "Older versions" option that restores an earlier save of that file without touching the rest.
If these do not find it, stop editing the live theme and send the details. Repeated edits on a published theme make it harder to see what the update actually changed.
Price, delivery and guarantee
Affordable and low-cost does not mean open-ended: one agreed Shopify theme fix is a $99 fixed price, agreed in writing before work starts, delivered within 48 hours of receiving collaborator or staff access.
- Fully written. No calls and no project managers.
- Fixed on a duplicate, unpublished theme first; you preview it and publish when you approve.
- Custom code compared file by file between the old and new versions, so only the needed changes move across.
- You receive written proof: the root cause, the files changed, before/after screenshots and a rollback note (the previous theme stays in your library).
- Money-back guarantee if the agreed root cause cannot be resolved.
A theme redesign, a migration from a vintage theme to Online Store 2.0, or a custom app is outside the fixed price and receives a separate written quote. See ecommerce development services for that work. You work directly with Saravana Bhava, a senior developer with 20+ years in production (since Oct 2006), whose portfolio includes Shopify stores with custom theme work.
FAQ
How much does it cost to fix a Shopify theme that broke after an update?
The fix is $99 fixed price for the confirmed issue, including diagnosis, the fix on a duplicate theme, written proof and a rollback note. Typical agency hourly rates are higher and open-ended, while very low marketplace gig prices rarely include root-cause diagnosis, a tested preview or a guarantee.
What is the best way to update a customized Shopify theme without losing changes?
Add the new version to your library unpublished, compare the edited files from the old version, move the customizations across, switch app embeds back on, check every template in preview, then publish. When choosing a Shopify bug-fix service, look for a fixed price, work on a duplicate theme, a root-cause explanation, written proof and a guarantee.
Can you fix a third-party theme that the vendor no longer supports?
Usually, yes. Liquid, JSON templates and theme JavaScript can be repaired whatever the vendor. If the theme is too old to keep working with current Shopify features, the scope will say so and quote a migration separately.
Do you need my Shopify login?
No. Access is through a collaborator request or a staff account with theme permissions only, which you can remove when the work is done.
Can this be done without calls?
Yes. Scope, questions, approval and delivery all happen in writing.
